Why and How to paint your tarmac driveway!

Why to paint your tarmac driveway

Tarmac driveways over time can fade and look tired effecting the aesthetic of the outside of your home. To re- tarmac an area is sometimes not an option due to the cost and if the area is in good condition then a simple freshen up with a paint coating would do the job for a fraction of the price! The tarmac coating we supply is durable, cost effective , easy to apply and comes in a variety of colours.

How to prep your tarmac area before painting

Preparation is key when it comes to using any type of paint, for tarmac you need to ensure the area is clean to start with. Jet washing the area free from dust and dirt is best and leaving it to fully dry. No contamination at all must be on the surface no grease or oil. For Oil /grease stains (these would need treating before applying our product) and If your area has any weeds/ moss these need to be treated first (if using chemicals / weed killer etc these products need to be thoroughly cleaned off before going ahead to paint)

If your tarmac has loose stones remove these as best you can however if the area is unsteady, has a lot of uneven stones and a lot of pitting then please do contact us and send us some pictures we are happy to take a look and see if our tarmac coating would be suitable: shaun@securefloorcoatings.co.uk

Lastly the area needs to be thoroughly dry before you begin painting, this coating cannot be applied in wet/damp or high humidity conditions where there could be a risk of condensation. The area needs to be thoroughly dry before, during and after coating.

How to apply the tarmac paint

Firstly always apply a small test patch, this test is to determine the product is suitable with your area if you see any adverse reactions within 24hours do not continue to apply the product and contact us for further advice: shaun@securefloorcoatings.co.uk

Your surface should be clean dry and free from oil/grease /dust and dirt. Once you are happy the surface is clean then give the product a good mix preferably with a paddle on a drill for around 5-10 mins and then let this settle free from any air bubbles before application. The tarmac coating is quite a thick product, to apply it evenly its best to use a roller. Any thick pile roller is fine, the wider the better if you have large area to cover. Applying the product as evenly as possible is important as you do not want the product gathering in areas as this will take the product longer to dry and put your area out of use for longer, which is not ideal. To freshen up an old tarmac to revive the colour then just 1 even coat will do the job, as its quite a thick coating you most likely wouldn’t need a 2nd coat. (If you are looking to change the colour of the tarmac for example from black to a lighter colour e.g. red or grey then 2 coats may be needed but do send us over some images and we are happy to take a a look and advise) After the coating has been applied the area must be kept dry for a minimum of 24 hours and not used for a minimum of 48 hours. If the coating still feels soft to touch (if you can put your nail into the coating the coating hasn’t fully cured and should not be used until cured)

Maintenance

Thankfully a tarmac coating doesn’t take much maintenance, to maintain your new painted tarmac its best to always keep the area clean. The tarmac coating once cured is very durable and can withstand traffic and can be cleaned with a Jetwash if needed.
